About the University
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER Kolkata) was established in 2006 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India. IISER Kolkata is designed to reach the prestigious position in the global setting that IISc, IIMs and IITs presently enjoy. IISER Kolkata is an autonomous institution awarding its own degrees. The central theme of the IISER Kolkata is to integrate education with research so that undergraduate teaching as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research work could be carried out in basic sciences.

Campus Information
The institute hosts the multi-institutional Center of Excellence in Space Sciences India (CESSI) with participating scientists from ISRO and other astronomy institutes and is involved in research associated with national space science missions. Other centres include the Centre for Advanced Functional Materials, National Centre for High Pressure Studies and a Centre for Climate and Environment Studies.

IISER Kolkata offers a 5 Year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BS-MS) Dual Degree Programme in synchrony with other IISERs. Admission to the BS-MS programme is conducted through a common annual summer selection. IISER Kolkata offers a unique training programme to the selected candidates through a balanced schedule of class room lessons, project and research work. While the Institute aims to comprehensively train the students in each of the major subjects, much attention is also directed to the development of the interdisciplinary skills.
